Overview
of the Competitive Program
Crenshaws
prides itself on having one the finest training facilities in the United
States. The 12,000 square foot gym which was built in 1984 is full of
the most up-to-date equipment. With safety a key concerns, Crenshaws
has six in-ground trampolines where students can build on air awareness
which is basic to all skills in gymnastics. Equipment also includes
(for boys) three pommel horses, various mushrooms and pommel teaching
aids, two sets of rings and vaults, three sets of parallel bars and high
bar, a floor exercise mat, tumbling strip into the pit and a tumbling
track. Equipment also includes (for
girls) two sets of uneven bars, bars over the pit, four high beams and a
multitude of low beams, a floor exercise mat, tumbling strip into the pit
and a tumbling track.
Over the
years, Crenshaws has sent more boys and girls to J.O. Nationals than almost
any club in the United States. The
pride of being successful extends past just winning. Our boys and
girls learn life long skills. Goal setting, time management, team
unity and fear conquering are just a few of those skills.
Crenshaw's
goals for our Spinner Team Program are to teach good competitive basics and
to prepare kids for the possibility of college scholarships. Many other
benefits may be found as in any high level competitive atmosphere. Our
program is backed by years of State, Regional and National Champions.
Our Boys is divided into the following levels:
Hot Shot Class
are children who are invited from our regular classes to come for additional
time per class. During the extra time, the coaches can watch attitude and
skill growth. Formal invitations are in August. These boys will
learn the Class 7 compulsories and will compete at a few local meets.
The ages range from 6-9 years and generally runs about $145 per month for the classes which meet two days per week.
Boys'
Junior Team ranges in age from 7-12 and will generally have
2-3 different teams which are divided by different levels. Most of
these boys are competing at a Class 6 or 5 level. Workouts are 3 - 4
days per week and run about $195-220 per month.
Boys'
Senior Team is made up of the strongest optional competitors
and range in age from 10-18 years. These boys compete at Class 5 -
Elite level and make up the most dedicated boys. They workout six
days per week and travel both in and out of state to competition. The
rewards far outweigh the sacrifices. Tuition for this program
is $250-270 per month.
Each
workout begins with a stretch period, workout on the events ( approximately
3 events daily ), and ends with a conditioning period to strengthen the
kids. Although the hours seem long, kids usually are begging for more time
in the gym. We generally have ratios which run around 1 coach per 6-8
gymnasts.
A
tuition reminder is mailed monthly. Sometimes when necessary, a newsletter
is included Families with more than one team member receive a 10% discount.
Each year gymnasts are required to become members of the USAG. This runs
about $50 and includes a gymnastics magazine.
Gymnastics
is a year-round activity. Gymnasts are expected to be at workouts to
maintain active status. We do excuse illness, injuries, vacations and
camps. However, the tuition is required throughout the year to maintain
active status. The only credits are injury-related. We do require a
30 day notice if a child wished to drop from team.
Gymnasts
are not invited to be a permanent team member. Coaches expect gymnasts to
maintain a good working attitude and relationship with the coaches and
other gymnasts. If we run into problems, we reserve the right to remove any
gymnast from the active team.
Gymnasts
are required to purchase uniforms. We try to use the same type for several
years and hold the costs down as much as possible.
Competitive
meets for Hot Shot, Junior & Senior Teams are both in-town and out-of-town.
Generally about 5-7 meets per year is the rule. Coaches expenses, meals,
motel, travel and a small per session stipend are split among the traveling
team members. We give some financial consideration to those parents who
help chaperone.
When a
boy is made a Spinner, the parents become a part of the Parents' Club. This
organization helps keep the team running smoothly on out-of-town meets or
special team activities. The Parents' Club budget is made up only of monies
made from intown meets or special fund raising activities. The money is
then used for upper level meets and the end of the year team picnic.
